Scholarship Opportunities and Announcements

The Coos Bay Area Zonta Service Foundation is affiliated with Zonta International, a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.The Coos Bay Area Club was chartered in 1953 and grants thousands of dollars in scholarships annually.Each scholarship is eligible to help cover tuition, fees, books, supplies, and if applicable, dormitory housing including a meal plan charged to a recipient’s account at any accredited college, university or trade school within the United States.

SCHOLARSHIPS:

CRITERIA for all scholarships:

  1. Applicants will demonstrate an interest in working to support Zonta’s mission:To improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health or professional status of women.
  2. For all scholarships, preference is given to applicants who exhibit financial need and who have graduated from a Coos County high school or have lived in Coos County for 5 years.
  3. Applicants are eligible to apply for one or more scholarships.
  4. Recommendation letters cannot be written by family members.

JANE M. KLAUSMAN WOMEN IN BUSINESS:$2,000 - Available March 1, 2019

Field of study must be in an accredited business or business-related program.

  • Open to Women of any age within the Coos County area.
  • Must complete minimum 36 college credits by end of Spring term 2020.
  • Cumulative GPS must be 3.0 or higher.
  • Must plan to attend accredited institution; full time (12 credits) in Fall of 2019.
  • Scoring will be based on:scholastic ability, essay and recommendation letters (2).
  • Recipients of this scholarship are automatically entered into the District 8 Scholarship competition to earn an additional $2,000 if selected.

STEM SCHOLARSHIP:$2,000

Field of study focus must be in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math.

  • Open to ALL individuals within the Coos County area.
  • Must complete minimum 36 college credits by end of Spring term 2020.
  • Cumulative GPA must be 3.0 or higher.
  • Open to high school or college students.
  • Must plan to attend accredited institution; full time (12 credits) in Fall of 2019.
  • Scoring will be based on:academic performance, essay and recommendation letters (2),

ZONTA CLUB SCHOLARSHIP $2,000

Any field of study is accepted.

  • Open to ALL individuals within the Coos County Area
  • Must complete minimum 36 college credit by end of Spring term 2020.
  • Cumulative GPA must be 2.5 or higher.
  • Open to high school or college students.
  • Must plan to attend accredited institution; full time (12 credits) by Fall 2019.
  • Scoring will be based on academic performance, essay content and recommendation letters (2).

WOMEN IN TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP:$2,000

Open to women pursuing an Information Technology (IT) degree or closely related program.

  • Are living or studying in a Zonta district/region.
  • Women not currently enrolled in a university are also eligible as long as they submit:
    • Evidence of completed training and outstanding performance
    • Description of current job with information about path that led to that job
    • Employer confirmation and recommendation
    • Reason for applying and description of desired career
  • Must plan to attend accredited institution, full or part-time by Fall 2019.
  • Scoring will be based on:Academic performance, essay content and volunteer work. Recipients of this scholarship may be nominated for the District 8 Scholarship competition to earn an additional $2,000 if selected.

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:$2,000

Any field of study is accepted.

  • Open to women within the Coos County area.
  • Must be returning to college after a minimum one- year break in education.Preference will be given to older-than-average students age 24 and up, students with family responsibilities, and those with financial need.
  • In the essay, provide a brief explanation why education was interrupted.
  • Must have high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Part-time enrollment accepted.
  • Must plan to attend accredited institution, full or part-time in Fall 2019.
  • Scoring will be based on:scholastic ability; content of essay and recommendation letters (2).

CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) CERTIFICATE SCHOLARSHIP:$1,000

  • Open to all individuals within the Coos County area.
  • Must be pursuing vocational or trade certificate/license.
  • In the essay, explain what you plan to do with your certification.
  • There is no requirement for minimum credits completed.
  • Part-time enrollment accepted.
  • Scoring will be based on:content of essay and recommendation letters (2).

Z-CLUB SCHOLARSHIP/MARSHFIELD HIGH SCHOOL - $1,000

Any field of study is accepted.

  • Must be a current member of Marshfield High School Z-Club.
  • Describe in your essay how your involvement in Z-Club has impacted you.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Must plan to attend accredited institution, full or part time in Fall of 2019.
  • Scoring will be based on: scholastic ability, content of essay and recommendation letters (2).

Z-CLUB SCHOLARSHIP/NORTH BEND HIGH SCHOOL - $1000

Any field of study is accepted.

  • Must be current member of North Bend High School Z-Club.
  • Describe in your essay how your involvement in Z-Club has impacted you.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Must plan to attend accredited institution, full or part time in Fall of 2019.
  • Scoring will be based on: scholastic ability, content of essay and recommendation letters (2).

ESSAY

In a 250 words or less (double spaced, minimum 12-point font) describe and include:

  • How you demonstrate leadership, motivation and character.
  • Your education and career goals.
  • How you support or plan to support Zonta’s mission to improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health or professional status of women, [during your education and in your future career].

Attach the essay to the application on an additional sheet of paper.

ACADEMIC TRANSCRIPT

An unofficial transcript of completed academic college or university work must be submitted with your application materials. A photocopy is acceptable.Although unofficial, the transcripts must be prepared and issued by the college or university.A list of courses and grades prepared by the applicant is not acceptable.

PLEASE NOTE

FULL APPLICATION WILL INCLUDE FIVE (5) COMPLETED ITEMS:

  1. Scholarship Application Form.
  2. Student Financial Information Form.
  3. Your Essay.
  4. Full unofficial transcript of all high school and college level work, as required.
  5. A signed Application Checklist.

One electronic copy OR one hard copy of your full application must be submitted and postmarked by March 20, 2019. See Application Check List for complete instructions and address.

  • Incomplete applications or applications that do not conform to all instructions will NOT be considered for scholarships.
  • Unused scholarship funds will not be released to scholarship recipients but will be returned to the Coos Bay Zonta Service Foundation

AWARDS:

YOUNG WOMEN IN PUBLIC AFFAIRS cash award applications are due MARCH 1, 2019.The winning recipient’s application will be forwarded to the district level for an opportunity for another award.All other scholarship applications are due APRIL 1, 2019.
