Scholarship Opportunities and Announcements

The Zonta Club of the Coos Bay Area will award 8 scholarships and 1 cash award totaling  $14,500 for school year 2017-2018.

Scholarship Application


Young Women in Public Affairs cash award application due March 1, 2017. All other scholarship applications due April 1, 2017.

CRITERIA for all scholarships:

1) Applicants will demonstrate an interest in working to support Zonta’s mission: to improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health or professional status of women.

2) Preference for all scholarships is given to applicants who exhibit financial need and have graduated from a Coos County high school or have lived in Coos County for 5 years.

3) Applicants are eligible to apply for one or more scholarships.

4) Recommendation letters must exclude family members.

5) Young Women in Public Affairs cash award application due March 1, 2017. All scholarship applications due April 1, 2017.


  1. STEM Scholarship: $2,000
    1. Field of study focus must be in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math
    2. Must complete minimum 36 college credits by end Spring term 2017
    3. Cumulative GPA must be 3.0 or better
    4. Open to high school or college student
    5. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full time (12 credits) in Fall 2017
    6. Scoring will be based on: scholastic ability; essay & recommendation letters (2).
  1. Zonta Club Scholarship #1 - $1,500
    1. Any field of study is accepted
    2. Must complete minimum 36 college credits by end Spring term 2017
    3. Cumulative GPA must be 2.5 or better
    4. Open to high school or college student
    5. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full time (12 credits) in Fall 2017
    6. Scoring will be based on:  scholastic ability; essay content & recommendation letters (2).
  1. Zonta Club Scholarship #2 - $1,500
    1. Any field of study is accepted
    2. No requirement for minimum credits completed
    3. Cumulative GPA must be 2.5 or better
    4. Open to students with FAFSA  EFC score of:

      Must provide copy of FAFSA determination letter showing EFC
    5. Open to high school or college student
    6. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full or part time in Fall 2017
    7. Scoring will be based on:  FAFSA EFC score; essay content & recommendation letters (2) 
  1. Memorial Scholarship - $2,000
    1. Must be female. 
    2. Must be returning to college after a minimum one year break in education. Preference will be given to older-than-average students age 24 and up, students with family responsibilities, and those with financial need.
    3. Provide brief explanation why education interrupted include in essay.
    4. Must have high school diploma or GED certificate
    5. Part time enrollment accepted
    6. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full or part time in Fall 2017
    7. Scoring will be based on:  scholastic ability; content of essay & recommendation letters (2).
  1. Second Chance Scholarship - $1,500
    1. Available to applicants who did not graduate from high school or GED certified students only.
    2. No requirement for minimum credits completed
    3. Part time enrollment accepted
    4. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full or part time in Fall 2017
    5. Scoring will be based on content of essay & recommendation letters (2).
  1. Career and Technical Education (CTE)
    C
    ertificate Scholarship - $2,000

    1. Must be pursuing vocational or trade certificate/license
    2. Tell us what you plan to do with your certification include in essay.
    3. No requirement for minimum credits completed
    4. Part time enrollment accepted
    5. Scoring will be based on content of essay & recommendation letters (2).
  1. Z-Club Scholarship - $1,000
    1. Must be current member of Marshfield or North Bend high school Z-Club
    2. Tell us in your essay how your involvement in Z-Club has impacted you.
    3. Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better
    4. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full or part time in Fall 2017
    5. Scoring will be based on:  scholastic ability; content of essay & recommendation letters (2). 

Young Women in Public Affairs Award $1,000
(Uses a separate application)

Must be received by March 1, 2017

  1. For Women, ages 16-19
  2. This award has a separate application process.
  3. Submit this application electronically AND mail one complete application to Zonta Scholarship Committee, PO Box 245, North Bend, OR 97459 submitted and postmarked by March 1, 2017.
  4. Recipient of local $1,000 cash award will automatically be entered into competition to receive another $1,000 at the District 8 level of Zonta International.


Jane M. Klausman Women in Business: $2,000
(Uses a separate application)

    1. Women of any age, pursuing an accredited business or business-related program

    3. Submit this application electronically AND mail one complete application to Zonta Scholarship Committee, PO Box 245, North Bend, OR 97459 submitted and postmarked by April 1, 2017
    4. Recipientautomatically entered into competition to receive another $1,000 at the District 8 level of Zonta International.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Zontians are executives and professionals decision-making positions willing to contribute to improving the legal, political, educational, professional, economic and health status of women. Each club includes members from a variety of occupations and professions. To ensure professional diversity within each club, Zonta membership is by invitation.

WHEN AND WHERE WE MEET

Luncheon meetings are held on the first and third Fridays of each month in the Saw Blade Room at The Mill Casino located at 3201 Tremont Street in North Bend, Oregon, Lunch is available for purchase at a cost of $11.80 for lunch buffet with entrée, $8.25 for soup/salad/bread or $2.25 for beverage only, prices include gratuity.
