Scholarship Opportunities and Announcements

The Coos Bay Area Zonta Service Foundation is affiliated with Zonta International a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. The Coos Bay Area Club was chartered in 1953 and grants thousands of dollars in scholarships annually. Each scholarship is eligible to help cover tuition, fees, books, supplies, and if applicable dormitory housing charged to a recipient's account at any accredited college, university or trade school within the United States.

SCHOLARSHIPS:

CRITERIA for all scholarships:

1) Applicants will demonstrate an interest in working to support Zonta's mission: to improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health or professional status of women.

2) Preference for all scholarships is given to applicants who exhibit financial need and have graduated from a Coos County high school or have lived in Coos County for 5 years.

3) Applicants are eligible to apply for one or more scholarships.

4) Recommendation letters must exclude family members.

PATTY J. BARTON SCHOLARSHIP -
Patty Barton was a long-time member of the Zonta Club of the Coos Bay Area. When she passed away in 2018 a scholarship fund was established in her name. The intent of the scholarship is to provide on-going support to a student who has overcome a significant life challenge, just as Patty did during her early years.

A Scholarship Award potentially totaling $20,000 paid directly to the student’s accredited school of choice. Total award amount will be divided over number of qualifying terms.
Application Due Date: June 1, 2020 Scholarship Awarded: August 1, 2020

1. Jane M. Klausman Women in Business: $2 ,000

a. Women of any age, pursuing an accredited business or business-related program
b. Must complete minimum 36 college credits by end Spring term 2020
c. Cumulative GPA must be 3.0 or higher
d. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full time (12 credits) in Fall 2020
e. Scoring will be based on scholastic ability; essay & recommendation letters (2)

2. STEM Scholarship: $3,000
a. Field of study focus must be in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math
b. Must complete minimum 36 college credits by end Spring term 2020
c. Cumulative GPA must be 3.0 or higher
d. Open to high school or college student
e. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full time (12 credits) in Fall 2020
f. Scoring will be based on scholastic ability; essay & recommendation letters (2)

3. Zonta Club Scholarship - $3,000
a. Any field of study is accepted
b. Must complete minimum 36 college credits by end Spring term 2020
c. Cumulative GPA must be 2.5 or higher
d. Open to high school or college student
e. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full time (12 credits) in Fall 2020
f. Scoring will be based on scholastic ability; essay content & recommendation letters (2)

4. Youth Community Engagement Scholarship (2-year scholarship/$2500 per year)
a. Age 24 and under
b. Full or part-time enrollment
c. Cumulative GPA must be 2.5 or higher
d. Must prove that one is now an active volunteer and throughout scholarship period to have volunteered or helped in some community related activity at least 50 hours a year.

5. Memorial Scholarship - $2,000
a. Must be female.
b. Must be returning to college after a minimum one-year break in education. Preference will be given to older
than-average students age 24 and up, students with family responsibilities, and those with financial need.
c. Provide brief explanation why education interrupted; please include in essay.
d. Must have high school diploma or GED certificate
e. Part time enrollment accepted
f. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full or part time in Fall 2020
g. Scoring will be based on scholastic ability; content of essay & recommendation letters (2)

6. Fresh Start Scholarship - $3 ,000
a. Available to applicants who did not graduate from high school or GED certified students only.
b. No requirement for minimum credits completed
c. Part time enrollment accepted
d. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full or part time in Fall 2020
e. Scoring will be based on content of essay & recommendation letters (2)

7) Career and Technical Education (CTE) Certificate Scholarship - $1 ,500
a. Must be pursuing vocational or trade certificate/license
b. Tell us what you plan to do with your certification; please include in essay.
c. No requirement for minimum credits completed
d. Part time enrollment accepted
e. Scoring will be based on content of essay & recommendation letters (2)

8. Z-Club Scholarship/Marshfield High School - $1 ,500
a. Must be current member of Marshfield High School Z Club
b. Describe in your essay how your involvement in Z-Club has impacted you
c. Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
d. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full or part time in Fall 2020
e. Scoring will be based on scholastic ability, content of essay & recommendation letters (2)

9. Z-Club Scholarship/North Bend High School - $1 ,500
a. Must be current member of North Bend High School Z-Club
b. Describe in your essay how your involvement in Z-Club has impacted you
c. Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
d. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full or part time in Fall 2020
e. Scoring will be based on scholastic ability, content of essay & recommendation letters (2)

10. Golden Z Scholarship (SWOCC) - $1 ,500
a. Must be current member of SWOCC Golden Z Club
b. Describe in your essay how your involvement in Z-Club has impacted you
c. Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
d. Must plan to attend accredited institution, full or part time in Fall 2020

ESSAY
In 250 words or less (double spaced, minimum 12-point font) describe and include:
1) How you demonstrate leadership, motivation and character.
2) Career goals
3) How you support or plan to support in your life Zonta's mission to improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health or professional status of women.

Essay to be attached to the application on an additional sheet of paper.

ACADEMIC TRANSCRIPT
An unofficial transcript of completed academic college or university work must be submitted with your application materials. A photocopy is acceptable. Although unofficial, the transcripts must be prepared and issued by the college or university. A list of courses and grades prepared by the applicant is not acceptable.

2) Student financial information form
3) Your essay
4) Full unofficial transcript of all college level work
5) A signed Application Checklist

One electronic copy OR one hard copy of your full application must be submitted and postmarked by May 1st, 2020. See Application Check List for complete instructions and address.

  • Incomplete applications or applications that do not conform to all instructions will NOT be considered for scholarships.
  • Unused scholarship funds will not be released to scholarship recipients but will be returned to the Coos Bay Zonta Service Foundation

AWARDS:

YOUNG WOMEN IN PUBLIC AFFAIRS cash award applications are due MARCH 1, 2020.The winning recipient’s application will be forwarded to the district level for an opportunity for another award. All other scholarship applications are due May 1, 2020.
